Discussions have been taking place between Commonwealth Games Scotland and the Scottish Government about the feasibility and possibility of Glasgow hosting a reimagined 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Glasgow Life has been assisting Commonwealth Games Scotland since late 2023 to develop their proposal alongside Glasgow City Council, the Commonwealth Games Federation, The Scottish Government and The UK Government.

Glasgow City Council has received a letter from the Scottish Government, confirming that they have given their support for the proposal to Commonwealth Games Scotland to host a version of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2026 and also informed the Scottish Parliament of this decision.

The Scottish Government also confirmed that the games will be funded from the Commonwealth Games Federation, Commonwealth Games Australia and Commonwealth Games Scotland and the proposal makes clear that no public funding will be required or provided from either the city or the country.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has responded confirming that it is delighted that Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) has received government support to host the event in 2026.

Details are being finalised and are expected to include the use of Glasgow Life's venues Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre and The Emirates Arena.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said "Glasgow is one of the world's leading events cities - and a diverse range of organisers and promoters deliver hugely successful arts, sport and other events here that are not only important to the cultural life of the city but also make a really significant contribution to its economy.

"It should be no surprise that, in looking to reimagine competitive sport at a Commonwealth level, organisers feel Glasgow is a place where their plans can flourish."
