Chinese New Year 2025 events at Glasgow Life venues

Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year as it is also known, takes place from 29 January to 12 February 2025.

Lunar New Year marks the start of the new year based on lunar calendars, or monthly cycles of the moon's phases.

It is also associated with the animals of the Chinese zodiac and 2025 is the Year of the Snake. The Snake symbolises wisdom, intuition and transformation, while offering personal growth and change opportunities.

Glasgow Life is organising events to celebrate Chinese New Year with the local community.

The first free celebration will take place at The Burrell Collection on Saturday 1 February (11.00am-4.00pm). There, you can enjoy an amazing lion dance performance from UK Glasgow Hong Lok Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe.

Ricefield Arts will join in the fun at The Burrell and offer dance performances, a workshop, calligraphy and crafts. There will also be free face painting, crafts and talks.

The whole day is free and there is no need to book, however, if you would like to take part in the storytelling or dance workshop, you will have to book on the day at reception. Spaces are limited so it will be first come, first served.

Kelvin Hall will host its annual Chinese New Year Family Day event on Saturday 8 February (12.00-3.00pm).

The facility has various free, drop-in Chinese family games planned. The event will give you a chance to try your hand at table tennis and badminton and learn a Chinese ribbon dance. You can also make your own folding paper snake and hang your wish on Kelvin Hall's wishing tree.

Riverside Museum is holding a Chinese New Year Family Day on Saturday 8 February from 12.00-3.00pm.

The free, drop-in activities at Riverside Museum, led by Ricefield Arts, include paper lantern-making and chopstick challenges. Visitors will also be given a chance to dress up in traditional Chinese costumes and get a calligraphy tattoo.
