Elder Park Library wins EDGE award

Elder Park Library, which reopened in 2024, has been awarded the Physical Award at the Library EDGE conference held in Edinburgh. EDGE is an event that brings together national and international library professionals.
The awards recognise outstanding achievements and commend remarkable library-based initiatives that underscore the value of libraries. Entries must demonstrate or promote the benefits of library and information services to various sectors, organisations, and communities; showcase innovation and creativity; or increase participation.
The Physical Award specifically acknowledges excellence in buildings, layout, and designated spaces.
The refurbishment of Elder Park Library and Community Hub began in July 2022 built on a partnership between Glasgow Life, GCC and Elder Park Housing Association.
Improvements include enhanced accessibility, lighting, ventilation, and asbestos removal. The upgrades encompass a comprehensive interior and exterior refurbishment, offering improved library and community areas, a new community kitchen, and additional bookable spaces for public use.
The renovated Elder Park Library and Community Hub also features upgraded energy performance, temperature and ventilation management, as well as enhanced fire safety and security systems.
Elder Park Library was originally gifted to Govan by Isabella Elder, who donated £10,000 for the construction of the building in the early 1900s. Her philanthropic efforts on behalf of the people of Govan have cemented her legacy in Glasgow's history, earning her recognition as one of the city's "greatest" figures. Isabella was married to John Elder, a prominent industrialist in Govan, after whom the nearby Elder Park is named.
