Annemarie Waddell and the team at Netherton Community Centre have been hosting fantastic events for local pensioners. The latest was a Glasgow 850 celebration at the centre last Friday, 21 March.

Young people from Knightswood and St Ninian's Primary Schools provided the entertainment. They performed Scottish country dancing and Gaelic singing. They also sang a song specially written to mark Glasgow's 850th birthday. Over 150 people from local seniors' groups, veterans' organisations, and churches attended.

The centre had an incredible atmosphere. From the moment the piper piped the children in until the event drew to a close with 'Auld Lang Syne'. The audience sang along with classics such as 'You Canny Shove Yer Granny Aff a Bus'. They also enjoyed a 'real' Glasgow menu of mince, tatties, Irn Bru, and tablet.

Our team delivered the event alongside High Knightswood, Anniesland Community Council, and Knightswood Connects.

Ellen from the Community Council said:

"As usual, none of this would have been possible without the centre staff. They must rank as the friendliest at any centre in Glasgow. Thinking back a couple of years, we had a very quiet venue. Thanks to a lot of hard work from the team, we now have a thriving centre at the hub of the area."

Annemarie and the team have secured external funding. So, they are now working on plans to take a group of local pensioners away to see a show and enjoy an overnight stay.
