Penilee Community Centre gym refurbishment

The gym area in Penilee Community Centre in South West Glasgow has just reopened following a major refurbishment. The centre now has a low carbon community gym space with low energy consumption Technogym cardio and resistance machines, providing a first-class experience for all in the local community, including those with additional support needs.

Colleagues from Glasgow Life Sport, the Community Assets team, Facility Management and Penilee Advisory Group all worked together to make this refurbishment possible. When equipment became available from Glasgow Club Easterhouse in early Spring 2023, discussions began around re-purposing the equipment for use at Penilee.

With assistance from Sharon Campbell, Health, Fitness and Infrastructure Manager, and her team, modern gym equipment (including maintenance) was made available to Penilee at a fraction of the costs to refurbish the existing ageing gym. The space also received new flooring and a lick of paint to freshen up the two gym areas in the centre. Pictured below are Chief Executive Susan Deighan with Sharon Campbell, Andrew Olney, Director of Libraries, Sport and Communities and Ross McMenemey, Health and Fitness Coordinator at the opening of the new gym space.

The gym at Penilee is not a Glasgow Club facility, instead it offers a more localised service to those who wish to stay within their own local community. The refurbishment means that people from the area can now enjoy access to modern and accessible gym equipment on their doorstep.
