The Burrell Collection named Scotland's best building
The Burrell Collection has been named winner of the prestigious Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland award.
Presented annually by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), the award was collected by John McAslan + Partners who carried out the £68.25m Burrell Renaissance project.
Judges said the project was "an outstanding example of problem solving and future proofing that has rejuvenated an old friend".
The A-listed building houses the collection of shipping magnate Sir William Burrell and his wife Lady Constance Burrell, which they gifted to the city in 1944. Some 9,000 objects form The Burrell Collection including one of the most significant holdings of Chinese art in the UK; medieval treasures including stained glass, arms and armour; over 200 tapestries, which are considered amongst the finest in the world; and paintings by renowned French artists including Manet, Cezanne and Degas.
Originally opened in 1983, the building closed in 2016 for a major refurbishment and redisplay before reopening in March 2022. Since then, the museum has gone on to welcome 1.5 visitors from all over the world, including most recently for our blockbuster Discovering Degas exhibition, which attracted more than 40,000 visitors between May and September this year.
