World Autism Awareness Day: how you can support inclusion

As we approach World Autism Awareness Day, it's a chance to reflect on how we can be inclusive in everything we do. We work with various people across our services every day, including autistic individuals. Taking small, meaningful steps can make everyone feel more welcomed and supported.

What is autism?

Autism is a lifelong neurodivergence. It affects how people communicate, interact, and experience the world. As a spectrum condition, it varies from person to person. Some autistic individuals may experience heightened sensitivity to noise, lights, or textures. Others may prefer routine and predictability in their daily lives. Adjustments and understanding can make all the difference.

How you can make a difference

Here are some practical ways we can help:

Be mindful of sensory needs. Consider how lighting, noise levels, and crowds might impact autistic visitors.

Communicate clearly. Use clear and concise language. Allowing time to process information can also make interactions more accessible. Some autistic individuals may also prefer written information.

Continue learning. The more we understand, the better we can support colleagues and customers. Take a few minutes to explore helpful resources like the National Autistic Society's guide to autism: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/what-is-autism
