1939 Register
The 2 November 2015 is the day family historians have been waiting for, with the publication online of the 1939 Register for England and Wales.
In 1939, at the outbreak of World War II, the British government introduced an act that would allow them to gather vital information about the country’s population.
This information would inform their decisions on identity cards, rationing, conscription and more, including – eventually – the formation of the NHS. On November 2nd 2015, for the first time, Findmypast - in partnership with The National Archives - is publishing the 1939 Register for England and Wales providing an unprecedented insight into a country on the eve of war.
There are 40m names on the Register, which includes the following information:
- Full names
- Addresses
- Dates of birth
- Marital status
- Occupations
The registers for Scotland and Northern Ireland are not online. If you wish to access the Scottish and Northern Ireland registers, visit National Records of Scotland and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
