Cats round the piano: A special collection of Christmas greetings

A mysterious album with the title "Scrap book" sits on a shelf in the Mitchell Library. Read on to find out more.
A Christmas card with two hares eating cabbage from a garden

This unusual item, in the Mitchell Library's collection tells the story of Christmas long ago, when cats sang carols, and mice had meetings.

Personal and family scrapbooks are a way of recording important events, such as childhood achievements, friendships, romances, and personal interests in one place. They may contain photographs, newspaper clippings, cards, tickets, notes and letters.

This particular scrapbook, lovingly collected, contains a person's memories, and documents the joy they experienced during the festive period, through the exchange of brightly coloured Christmas cards in the Victorian and Edwardian period.
