Over £50,000 of essential repairs to be carried out at Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre
Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre will undergo over £50,000 worth of essential repairs, Glasgow Life has announced.
The venue will temporarily close to the public after some rot was found. A section of the first floor and joists will be replaced to ensure the building remains safe to use.
The works are expected to take 8 to 10 weeks, and the partial closure will take effect from Monday 13 February. They are scheduled to begin the following week on Monday 20 February.
Arrangements are in place to make sure the leaseholder, Big Noise, can continue using the venue. A few other let holders, including GAP childcare services, will also be unaffected.
Due to the extent of the works, the centre can't remain open to the public. Govanhill Library will replace the venue as a designated Welcome Place.
Andrew Olney, Director of Libraries, Sport and Communities at Glasgow Life, said:
"Centres like Govanhill are at the heart of communities and are vital for people living nearby. Effective action is being taken to make sure work gets underway quickly and the venue remains safe to use. These repairs are essential and will make sure the community can continue to enjoy and use the centre for years to come."Other let holders will be offered the St Francis Community Centre or Geoff Shaw Community Centre as alternative venues.
