Glasgow Walking and Wheeling Support Package

Supporting groups and organisations to get more people walking and wheeling
Group of people

This Project supports organisations to get more people in Glasgow walking and wheeling. This can be through establishing new Health Walks or increasing capacity on existing Walks.

Applications are welcomed from groups and organisations that work with and support;

  • Disabled people
  • People from minoritised ethnic communities

Support applied for can include taster walks, tailored training and a small grant up to £400 to help get your walks started.

Please read the information below before applying. If you would like to talk through any of your ideas or have any questions before submitting your application please contact us  at walking@glasgowlife.org.uk or call the Walking Team on 0141 287 0963.

Glasgow Life require all successful organisations to be appropriately constituted and, if applying for funding, have their own bank account.

We will support projects that aim to get more adults walking and wheeling by either setting up new Health Walks or increase the number of participants on existing walks.

We define a Health Walk as ‘short, safe, social, local led walk up to an hour long’. Walking is very flexible and can be adapted to suit all needs and interests such as history walks, wildlife walks, family fun walks, picnic walks, treasure hunts, etc!

To be considered for this project we expect;

  • A minimum of 8 walks to be delivered (projects that have considered long term plans and sustainability being prioritised)
  • All new walkers must complete a short, simple joining form.
  • Become a Scottish Health Walk Network member (this is free to join and there are many member benefits)
  • Complete a simple end of project report and provide basic attendance figures.

We are always open to new suggestions and creative ideas to remove barriers to increase participation.

If you feel funding is required see below a list of items we will support (this is provided as a guide only):

  • Staff/sessional staff time
  • Refreshments
  • Hardship Costs that remove barriers to participation
  • Equipment such as jackets, umbrellas or ponchos
  • Marketing and Promotion
  • Administration costs
  • Celebration events

All costs must be directly linked to your walking project.

Fantastic - we love to receive applications to support new projects!

Firstly, read through the project guidance. Create a clear picture in your head of what you want to achieve and how the project and any funding required can support this.

After this, please submit your application.  If you would like support please contact us at walking@glasgowlife.org.uk or call 0141 287 0963.

The Walking Project is open and applications are welcomed up until Friday 4th October with project reports submitted by early summer 2025.

All applications are assessed against the same criteria below.

1. Project Benefits

What difference is your project intended to make? This includes the number of people it will benefit and the target groups for your activity.

2. How do you plan to engage people in your project?

What ideas do you have to reach people and encourage them to get involved?

3. Sustainable Benefit

How will you try and ensure that the benefits of your project will last longer term?

4. Project Costs

If requesting funding as part of your application please ensure your costs are reasonable and all needed for the delivery of your project. You should be reasonable, clear and ensure all costs have a direct relation to getting more people walking and wheeling.

The Project panel will assess whether the amount requested provides good value for the project being delivered.

5. Organisation

Does your organisation have everything in place to deliver this project? The online form will allow you to upload evidence of your organisation bank account and governance documents.

The Glasgow Health Walk Programme is unable to support the following:

  • Applications from groups or organisations based outside the Glasgow City Council boundary.
  • Applications from groups that are not constituted
  • Any retrospective costs
  • Capital costs
  • Long term coaching or delivery costs

You are now working in partnership with Glasgow Life to get more people walking and wheeling!

We will work together to deliver your project and get more people active.

If anything changes in your plan, including any setbacks, we will work through this together.

When your project is up and running then we want to hear all about it! We can also help you promote your walk via our Activity Finder and social media.

Tag us on social media at Glasgow Sport using #ActiveGlasgow and we will share your story.

And when the funding has come to an end all we ask for is for you to complete a short impact report to tell us the difference that your project made.
