Unearthed: The Power of Gardening is a free display at The Mitchell Library (2 May – 10 August 2025) exploring the transformative, enriching and sometimes radical power of gardening. Inspired by the British Library’s major exhibition (2 May – 10 August 2025), Mitchell Library is one of 30 library services celebrating gardening through the UK-wide Living Knowledge Network.
From windowsills to allotments, Unearthed: The Power of Gardening at
The Mitchell Library explores how the act of gardening can heal and sustain
people in a multitude of ways. It reveals how gardening can bring people
together, empower communities and shape our relationship with the natural
world. It also considers gardening as a form of activism, as a means of
challenging land ownership and highlighting social disparities, as well as
providing a global story about the movement of plants.
As well as a specially designed travelling exhibition
created by the British Library, our display will reflect the collections in the
Mitchell Library, with some surprising stories behind the books! From the first
drawing of a pineapple to a beautifully embroidered book with at least 8 named
owners, our exhibition will display underknown objects from the Mitchell’s
collections.

We also have a supply of books in Braille, large print and audio.
Accessible toilets
This accessible toilet is approximately 26m (28yd 1ft) from the main entrance. This accessible toilet is located to the rear right as you enter.
Assistance dogs
Guide and assistance dogs are welcome and a bowl of water can be provided.
Hearing loop
There is a fixed loop hearing assistance system.
This venue does not play background music.
Wheelchair access
There is a wheelchair to borrow. To borrow the wheelchair, please contact a member of staff.
Motorised scooters are allowed in public parts of the venue.

PC's and printing services are available for public use.
Parking
Please note that there is on-street parking surrounding The Mitchell Library. This is metered from 8am-6pm. Monday to Friday. As this is a local residential area, please use these spaces considerately. Alternatively, there is a NCP Car Park on India Street next to Charing Cross Train Station which is a 2 minute walk away.
Photography and video recording
On occasion, Glasgow Life will be on the premises to film and take photos.
Free wifi
We provide free WIFI access and further access to over 50 PCs for public use
