We are delighted to welcome the established poet, novelist and short story writer Charlie Gracie to Baillieston Library. Charlie Gracie was born and bred in Baillieston and his poetry collections, Good Morning (2010) and Tales from the Dartry Mountains (2020) are published by Diehard Publishing. His novel, To Live With What You Are, partly set in Baillieston, was longlisted for the 2019 Bath Novel Award.
Charlie will be joined by Airdrie poet Peter A, who will share work from Art of Insomnia (Hedgehog Poetry Press, 2021), and poems from his upcoming publication.
Belfast to Baillieston is a family and industrial narrative that takes as its core the life of Jimmy Gracie, grandfather of the writer Charlie Gracie. The series of poems and short stories illuminates the harshness and the joys in the lives of this working-class family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries on both sides of the North Channel. The book explores how poverty, migration, fortitude and love all mingle to form the wholesome, honourable lives that families like Jimmy Gracie’s create from hardship.
There will be an opportunity to meet and talk with Charlie
and Peter after the event and to buy books.
