Fiddle and bass player Charlie Stewart is 2017’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year, a Danny Kyle Award winner, and a BBC Young Folk Award semi-finalist. His New Voices compositions are inspired by experiences that he may not have had this year without coronavirus. Spending more time at home with his parents, some of the tunes have been inspired by the surrounding countryside, memories of those same places, and time spent with family. Charlie found further inspiration after returning to Glasgow, seeing friends again, spending longer periods alone and seeing the strangeness of the empty streets.
As well as the loss caused by the virus, Charlie hopes these compositions convey an appreciation for the time he was lucky enough to have, which has helped him gain some perspective and recognition of the things he finds most important. Joining Charlie will be the amazing Lauren MacColl, Megan Robertson Henderson and Juliette Lemoine on strings, Matthew Carmichael on tenor saxophone, Innes White on guitar and mandolin, Fergus McCreadie on piano, James Lindsay on bass and Stephen Henderson on drums.
