On the 80th anniversary of the sinking of TSS Athenia, attacked on the day World War 2 was declared in September 1939, Glasgow City Archives has shared details of a Disaster Fund file set up to help victims. It contains fascinating letters and telegrams of thanks from a young John F. Kennedy, who visited American survivors being cared for in Glasgow, from his father Joseph Kennedy, the US Ambassador to the UK and President Franklin Roosevelt. It holds photographs, letters and newspaper clippings detailing the fundraising effort and how the city and individuals helped all those caught up in the tragedy.
